Gameboy Color non oem reproduction R-Type DX video game cartridge. Game cartridge comes with a plastic protective case.
Released in 1999 for the Game Boy Color, R-Type DX is a compilation developed by Bits Studios and published by Nintendo. It brings together the classic side-scrolling shoot-'em-up arcade experiences of R-Type and R-Type II into a single cartridge.
Included Game Modes
The cartridge is often described as having five "games" or modes:
- Original Monochrome Versions: The original Game Boy releases of R-Type and R-Type II, playable in their classic black-and-white style.
- Color-Enhanced Versions: Updated versions of both games featuring full-color palettes specifically for the Game Boy Color hardware.
- R-Type DX Mode: The headline feature that merges R-Type I and II into one continuous, back-to-back mission for a marathon gameplay experience.
Core Gameplay Features
- The R-9 Fighter: Players pilot the iconic R-9 "Arrowhead" starship through levels filled with biomechanical enemies and massive bosses.
- The Force Pod System: A revolutionary power-up mechanic where players use an indestructible glowing orb (the "Force"). This pod can be attached to the front or back of the ship to serve as a shield or detached to roam and provide independent fire.
- Power-Ups: Players can acquire diverse weaponry including the Fire Chain, Super Laser, and Bubble Beam to tear through the Bydo Empire's defenses.
- Charged Beam Mechanic: The ship can charge a powerful beam shot that deals massive damage and can pierce through multiple weaker enemies.
Port Quality and Technical Details
- Visuals: The color enhancement significantly improves readability, helping players distinguish bullets and enemies against backdrops. However, the game can suffer from sprite flicker and slowdown when the screen is crowded.
- Difficulty: Known for its extreme challenge, the game requires precision, timing, and level memorization. To assist players, the port includes infinite continues.
- Hardware Compatibility: Though designed for the Game Boy Color, the cartridge is backward compatible with the original monochrome Game Boy.
