Released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is an expanded "director's cut" and prequel to the series' first 3D entry, Castlevania 64. While it includes the original game's content, it features significant technical improvements, redesigned levels, and two new primary characters. 

Story and Protagonists

• Cornell's Quest (1844): The main story follows Cornell, a "man-beast" with the power to transform into a werewolf. Set eight years before the events of Castlevania 64, he must rescue his sister, Ada, from being sacrificed to resurrect Dracula.
• Henry Oldrey: After completing Cornell’s story, you unlock Henry, a soldier who was saved by Cornell as a child. His mission focuses on rescuing kidnapped children across various levels.
• Returning Heroes: The original protagonists, Reinhardt Schneider and Carrie Fernandez, are also playable and can be unlocked through Henry's quest. Their campaigns feature reworked levels and new bosses, though some original voice acting and cutscenes were removed to save cartridge space. 

Key Gameplay Features

• Improved Controls: The camera system and character movement were streamlined to be more intuitive than its predecessor.
• Redesigned Levels: Many stages, such as the Forest of Silence and the Villa, were redesigned with new platforming puzzles and different enemy layouts.
• Expansion Pak Support: The game utilizes the N64 Expansion Pak for a high-resolution mode, though players often noted framerate issues in this setting.
• Upgradable Sub-weapons: Unlike the previous title, sub-weapons (like holy water and axes) can now be powered up through three different levels of strength. 

Notable Sequences

The game is remembered for its tense survival horror segments:

• Magic Nitro: A high-stakes mission where the player must carefully transport volatile explosives through an obstacle course; a single hit or fall results in an immediate game over.
• Caged Battles: Challenging encounters where players are locked in small arenas with monsters like Cerberus or vampires, sometimes under a strict time limit.
