Carmageddon 64 is a vehicular combat game released for the Nintendo 64 in the year 2000. Rebuilt from the ground up to bring the chaotic, controversial sandbox mechanics of the PC original to home consoles, the game emphasizes freedom, exploration, and destruction rather than traditional racing etiquette.

The Story & Concept

Set in the year 2026, the Earth has been ruined by nuclear warfare and toxic pollution. Most of the wealthy and healthy population has been evacuated to off-world colonies, leaving the surface overrun by mutated, blood-thirsty zombies. To clean up the planet and provide televised entertainment, the totalitarian World Government organizes Carmageddon: a brutal death race. Players control the psychotic driver Max Damage, competing for the ultimate grand prize: a first-class ticket out of the wasteland and a new life in an off-world paradise.

Gameplay Mechanics

Instead of just driving faster than everyone else, players can win any given map in one of three distinct ways:

• Traditional Racing: Finishing all the laps and driving through every checkpoint.
• Vehicular Combat: Totaling and "wasting" every single opposing AI driver on the track.
• Mass Annihilation: Slicing through the level to completely wipe out every zombie roaming the environment.
• Smashing into rival cars rewards players with time extensions and Credits, which can be spent on instant mid-race repairs. However, the game adds a unique strategic drawback: unlike the original PC edition where mowing down humans was entirely beneficial, running into the undead in the N64 version causes roughly 2.5% structural damage to your vehicle with every hit, forcing drivers to manage their aggressive streaks carefully.
