Castlevania: Dracula X (released as Akumajō Dracula XX in Japan and Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss in Europe) is a side-scrolling action-platformer developed and published by Konami for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995. The game is a heavily altered "reimagining" of the Japan-exclusive PC Engine CD game, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood.
Plot & Setting
Set in medieval Transylvania, the narrative follows Richter Belmont, a powerful vampire hunter wielding the iconic sacred whip. Count Dracula has awakened from his slumber and kidnapped Richter’s girlfriend, Annette, and her sister, Maria Renard. Richter must breach the gothic walls of Dracula's castle, defeat dark minions like Cerberus and the Salamander, and rescue his loved ones before sealing Dracula away.
Gameplay Features
- Classic Action-Platforming: Unlike later RPG-style entries, Dracula X stays true to the tough, linear, old-school style of the franchise. Richter controls with deliberate, rigid movements where mid-air jumps cannot be easily adjusted.
- Branching Paths & Stages: The game features 7 base stages with alternate routes. Taking certain actions or uncovering hidden paths shifts the trajectory of the levels.
- Three Multiple Endings: The final outcome changes dramatically based on whether you successfully find and rescue both Annette and Maria, just Maria, or fail to save either of them before fighting Dracula.
- Sub-Weapons & Item Crashes: Along with his whip, Richter can utilize traditional sub-weapons (like axes, holy water, and crosses) and unleash cinematic, screen-clearing "Item Crash" desperation attacks.
- Password System: Progress is saved manually using grid-based passwords rather than an internal battery backup.
Graphics & Sound
The game is well-regarded for its detailed 2D sprites, atmospheric parallax backgrounds, and vibrant mode-7 fire effects. The soundtrack, featuring contributions from composers like Michiru Yamane, includes heavy-hitting 16-bit arrangements of iconic tracks like "Blood Tears" and "Opposing Bloodlines".
