Contra III: The Alien Wars is a landmark 1992 run-and-gun shooter video game developed and published by Konami for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Regarded as one of the definitive action titles of the 16-bit era, it is celebrated for its frantic pacing, cinematic set-pieces, and intense difficulty.

The Plot

Set in the futuristic year 2636, the game takes place two years after the events of Super Contra. The alien forces—led by the notorious Red Falcon—return to Earth to launch a devastating, full-scale invasion known as the "Alien Wars". Players control elite commandos (historically Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, but localized as Jimbo and Sully in the original North American release) as they fight their way through hordes of extraterrestrial threats to save mankind.

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Dual Weapon Slots: For the first time in the series, players can hold two different weapons simultaneously and swap between them on the fly.
  • Expanded Movement: The game allows characters to climb walls, ladders, and seamlessly swing along poles or ceilings like monkey bars.
  • Massive Arsenal: Power-ups include iconic series staples and new artillery, such as the Spread Shot, Homing Gun, Laser, Flamethrower, and screen-clearing Bombs.
  • Cooperative Play: A signature feature is the local two-player simultaneous co-op mode, allowing two players to team up against the alien forces.

Stage Structure & Mode 7 Technology

The game spans six action-packed stages, utilizing the technical capabilities of the SNES to create unique visual experiences:

  • Side-Scrolling Stages (4 Levels): Traditional fast-paced platforming where players navigate war-torn cities, ride high-speed air bikes, and leap between mid-air missiles.
  • Top-Down Stages (2 Levels): Multi-directional, non-linear stages where players use the SNES hardware Mode 7 rotation and scaling effects to maneuver and hunt down enemy pods.

Regional Differences

In PAL regions (Europe and Australia), the game was released under the title Super Probotector: Alien Rebels. Due to local censorship policies regarding human-on-human and realistic violence at the time, the human commandos were replaced with heavily armored robots, though the core gameplay and level designs remained identical.
