Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX is an action-packed, 2D run-and-gun side-scrolling shooter developed by TOSE and published by Konami for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) handheld system. Released in 2002, the game is a modified handheld port of the 1992 Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) masterpiece, Contra III: The Alien Wars.

Core Story and Objective

  • The Premise: Set in the 27th century, the alien forces of the evil Red Falcon invade Earth, taking over much of the planet.
  • The Mission: Players control special forces heroes (such as Jimbo and Sully or Bill Rizer and Lance Bean depending on regional localization) to fight through waves of alien monsters, colossal robots, and biological mutants to save Neo City.

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Run-and-Gun Combat: Traditional high-speed, side-scrolling platforming where players must constantly jump, climb, and fire in 8 directions to survive.
  • Weapon Upgrades: Players intercept floating weapon pods to change their standard rifle to iconic weaponry such as the Spread Shot, Homing Missiles, Laser, and Flamethrower.
  • Tactical Aiming: Utilizes the GBA's shoulder buttons. Holding L locks the character's position to aim in place, while holding R locks the gun direction to allow strafing and backpedaling.
  • Extreme Difficulty: Retains the signature, brutal "one-hit kill" mechanic from classic Contra entries.

GBA Changes & Exclusive Content

Unlike a direct port, the GBA edition features several distinct structural alterations from the SNES original:

  • Replaced Stages: The two controversial top-down Mode 7 perspective stages from the SNES version were completely removed. They were replaced by two entirely new, side-scrolling levels taken from the Sega Genesis classic, Contra: Hard Corps.
  • Weapon Limitations: Players can only hold one weapon at a time, removing the SNES feature that allowed carrying and switching between two different guns.
  • Password System: Added a convenient password save feature to help players preserve their stage progression.
  • Multiplayer Support: Includes a simultaneous 2-player cooperative mode using a GBA Link Cable connection.
