Deadeus is a retro-style psychological horror adventure game released for the original Game Boy in 2019.
Deadeus is a retro-style psychological horror adventure game originally developed for the Nintendo Game Boy. Created by independent artist Adam Birch (under the pseudonym -IZMA-) using the GB Studio engine, the homebrew title was initially released in 2019 and later received a physical cartridge production. Despite its retro Pokémon-like aesthetic, the game contrasts cute 8-bit visuals with dark, occult, and mature narrative themes.
Narrative Premise
The story centers on a young boy living in a quiet, nameless village. The plot begins when he and the other local children experience a terrifying, shared prophetic nightmare. In the dream, an eldritch god—a massive floating eye surrounded by smaller eyeballs—warns that the boy's "flesh is a debt long overdue" and promises to return in three days to destroy everyone. Upon waking, players have exactly a three-day deadline to investigate the village, uncover a hidden town cult, and determine if they can prevent the impending apocalypse.
Gameplay Mechanics
- Time Progression: The game operates on a three-day structure. Time does not pass automatically; the day progresses only when the player actively chooses to go to bed. Each sleep cycle triggers a new esoteric nightmare message.
- Non-Linear Investigation: There is no combat, leveling, or standard RPG stats. Gameplay heavily relies on tracking NPC schedules, talking to town residents, exploring changing daily events, and collecting specific key artifacts (like flowers, a blank book, a meteor, and a dead cat).
- High Replayability: The narrative features 11 distinct endings with no single direct path. A single playthrough takes under an hour, but uncovering all branching paths requires careful planning and experimentation. Endings can vary from simply leaving town or sleeping through the apocalypse, to completing complex, dark rituals.
