Final Fantasy II for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), originally released in North America on November 23, 1991, is a localized version of Final Fantasy IV from Japan. Developed and published by Square (then Squaresoft), it was rebranded as "II" for the Western market because the actual Japanese Final Fantasy II and III had not been released outside of Japan at that time.
Game Plot & Setting
The story is a dark, character-driven fantasy epic that focuses heavily on redemption, loyalty, and tragedy.
- The Protagonist: You follow Cecil Harvey, a Dark Knight and captain of the "Red Wings," an elite airship fleet belonging to the Kingdom of Baron.
- The Conflict: After questioning the King’s increasingly cruel orders to seize magical crystals from peaceful nations, Cecil is stripped of his command.
- The Quest: Alongside his childhood friend, the dragoon Kain Highwind, Cecil sets out on a journey that forces him to turn away from the darkness, transform into a Paladin, and stop a sinister figure named Golbez from destroying the world.
Core Gameplay Features
The game fundamentally revolutionized the role-playing genre by introducing mechanics that became staples for decades.
- Active Time Battle (ATB): This game premiered the ATB system, adding real-time urgency to combat. Instead of traditional turn-based choice, characters and enemies strike as soon as their individual, invisible speed bars fill up.
- Fixed, Story-Driven Party: Unlike the original Final Fantasy where players created custom classes, this game features a rotating roster of up to five active heroes at a time. Characters leave, rejoin, or even sacrifice themselves based entirely on the unfolding narrative.
- Unique Character Skills: Each party member fills a distinct thematic role with specific battle commands, such as Rosa’s white magic, Cid’s ability to analyze enemy weaknesses, and Edge’s ninja skills.
Technical Presentation
As the franchise’s 16-bit debut, the game was a massive technical leap forward from its NES predecessors.
- Mode 7 Graphics: The game utilizes the SNES's signature Mode 7 capabilities to create scaling and rotating visual effects during airship travel.
- Iconic Audio: Composed by Nobuo Uematsu, the game's symphonic soundtrack is widely praised for utilizing the SNES sound chip to dramatically heighten emotional storytelling.
