Final Fantasy III for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)—originally released in North America in 1994 by Squaresoft—is actually Final Fantasy VI in the main series chronology. Square altered the numbering system for its original Western release because the true Japanese Final Fantasy II, III, and V had not been localized at the time. Widely considered a landmark masterpiece of the 16-bit era, it transitions the franchise from traditional high-fantasy into a dark, steampunk-inspired setting.

The Story and World

The narrative takes place 1,000 years after the legendary "War of the Magi," a conflict that reduced the world to ashes and caused magic to completely vanish. In this new era, humanity has rebuilt society using modern machinery, iron, and gunpowder. The plot kicks off when the tyrannical Gestahlian Empire attempts to hunt down and enslave the few remaining magical beings known as Espers to weaponize their energy. The adventure begins with Terra Branford, a young woman enslaved by the Empire for her innate magical abilities, and Locke Cole, a treasure hunter who helps her escape. Together, they join a faction of rebel forces attempting to overthrow the imperial dictatorship.

Core Gameplay Features

  • Massive Playable Cast: Features 14 permanent playable characters, the largest roster of any main-line entry, including fan favorites like Celes, Sabin, Cyan, Shadow, and Edgar.
  • The Esper System: Rather than traditional locked-in classes, characters customize their growth by equipping magical artifacts called Magicite. Equipping different Espers grants stat bonuses upon leveling up and dictates how party members learn magic spells.
  • Multi-Party Dungeons: Several major narrative checkpoints split the roster into up to three separate groups simultaneously, forcing players to cycle between active squads to solve environmental puzzles and conquer dungeons.
  • The World of Ruin: Roughly two-thirds of the way through the campaign, a catastrophic narrative twist alters the entire geometry of the overworld, transforming the game from a linear narrative into a sprawling, open-ended sandbox focused on exploration and reuniting your scattered party.
  • Kefka Palazzo: The game features one of the most iconic, unhinged, and psychopathic villains in video game history—a court mage who rises to godhood simply to watch the world burn.

Technical Achievements

The title pushed the limits of the Super Nintendo hardware. It heavily utilized the console's Mode 7 graphics engine to render a pseudo-3D perspective when piloting airships or riding Chocobos across the world map. The game also features a universally praised soundtrack composed by Nobuo Uematsu, which includes the iconic, 21-minute prog-rock final boss movement, "Dancing Mad".
