Final Fantasy V never received an official Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) release in North America. Originally published by Squaresoft in Japan on December 6, 1992, for the Super Famicom, it was bypassed for localization because publishers feared its deep mechanics were too complex for Western audiences. Consequently, "USA SNES versions" found today are aftermarket reproduction cartridges utilizing English fan translations or emulation files.

Game Overview

• The Plot: A wanderer named Bartz investigates a fallen meteor and unites with Princess Lenna, an amnesiac old man named Galuf, and a pirate captain named Faris. Together, they journey across multiple worlds to stop the ancient sorcerer Exdeath from destroying the elemental crystals and unleashing the Void.
• The Gameplay: The game features an expanded Active Time Battle (ATB) system. It is highly celebrated for its revolutionary, deep iteration of the Job System.
• The Class Customization: Players unlock over 20 distinct character classes (such as Knight, White Mage, Ninja, and Blue Mage) by collecting crystal shards. Characters earn Ability Points (ABP) to permanently master skills from one job, which can then be equipped onto completely different classes for unique cross-class customization.

History of the Missing US Release

• The Numbering Confusion: Because Final Fantasy II (FF4) and Final Fantasy III (FF6) were localized out of order on the SNES, Final Fantasy V skipped the 16-bit era in the West entirely.
• Scrapped Localizations: Square initially planned to localize the game in late 1994 as Final Fantasy III or Final Fantasy Extreme, but both projects were canceled to prevent delays for Chrono Trigger.
