G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is a highly-regarded 1991 run-and-gun action-platformer developed by KID and published by Taxan for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Based on the iconic Hasbro toy line and cartoon series, the game tasks the G.I. Joe team with completing six distinct seek-and-destroy missions across the globe to demolish hidden Cobra bases and defeat Cobra Commander.

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Squad Customization: Players choose a three-man squad for each mission. A designated team leader is assigned automatically, and you select two other Joes to fill out the team.
  • Character Swapping: You control one hero at a time but can instantly swap between your three chosen characters via the pause menu to utilize different health bars or skills.
  • Two-Part Missions: Stages generally consist of an open area to battle enemies and gather weapon power-ups, followed by an indoor exploration segment where you must plant explosives on Cobra base bombsites.
  • Vehicle Hijacking: Throughout the levels, characters can hop into and commandeer enemy Cobra vehicles like the Pogo and Buzz Boar.

Playable Characters

Each character features distinct jump heights, individual melee strengths, and unique weapon stats:

  • Duke: The balanced, all-rounder unit with average attributes.
  • Snake Eyes: Fast ninja who jumps the highest, climbs walls, and shoots energy projectiles that consume zero ammunition.
  • Rock 'n Roll: Equipped with the strongest and most effective long-range firearm.
  • Captain Grid-Iron: Packs the most powerful close-quarters melee punch.
  • Blizzard: A specialized winter soldier capable of shooting projectiles directly through solid walls.
  • General Hawk: The commander who issues mission briefings. He becomes fully playable in the sixth and final level, sporting superhero-like maximum stats and a jet pack that grants flight.
