Gekido Advance: Kintaro's Revenge is a 2D side-scrolling beat 'em up game developed by the Italian studio NAPS Team and released for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2002. It serves as a single-protagonist sequel to the original PlayStation game, Gekido: Urban Fighters.
Game Overview & Plot
Set one year after the epic battles of the original game, a dark presence threatens humanity once again. You play as Tetsuo, a martial arts disciple and the adopted son of Ushi, the master of the ancient art of Shin-Ken. Tetsuo is tasked with exploring a remote farming village plagued by supernatural horrors—including rising corpses, vanishing children, strange raven attacks, and a demon-infested temple.
Gameplay Mechanics
Unlike traditional, linear side-scrolling brawlers that only require moving from left to right, Kintaro's Revenge introduces tactical exploration elements:
- Non-linear Level Design: Players navigate through maze-like environments across five chapters, requiring backtracking to locate keys, open locked doors, and speak with villagers to advance the story.
- Combat System: Tetsuo utilizes a gritty martial arts move set including punches, kicks, dashes, jump attacks, and screen-clearing special magic that costs health but stuns all enemies on screen.
- Platforming Elements: The game regularly forces players to cross narrow, hazardous platforms, breaking up the standard combat loop.
- Unlockable Modes: The original cartridge includes extra replay value via a Survival mode and Time Attack mode to challenge seasoned players.
Visuals and Legacy
At the time of its release, the game was highly praised for its striking hand-drawn anime-style visuals, fluid character animations, and detailed sprite work that pushed the hardware capabilities of the Game Boy Advance.
