Jet Grind Radio (released as Jet Set Radio in Europe) for the Game Boy Advance is a 2003 portable adaptation of Sega’s iconic, cel-shaded Dreamcast action game. Developed by Vicarious Visions and published by THQ, the handheld port remarkably translates the fast-paced graffiti-tagging and inline-skating gameplay of the original onto Nintendo's 16-bit hardware.
Game Overview
- The Plot: Set in the futuristic city of Tokyoto, players control members of the "GGs," a rebellious youth graffiti gang led by Beat. The corporate conglomerate Rokkaku Group and the local government have cracked down on expression, forcing your crew to skate through territories, battling rival gangs and evading aggressive police forces led by Police Chief Onishima.
- Gameplay: The core objective is to explore levels, gather spray paint cans, and "tag" specific urban environments with graffiti within a strict time limit while avoiding law enforcement.
- The Engine: To replicate the 3D world of the Dreamcast, Vicarious Visions utilized the same isometric 2.5D engine they designed for their highly praised GBA ports of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.
Key Features & Adaptations
- Visuals & Perspective: The game emulates the Dreamcast's distinct cel-shaded art style using bright, cartoony 2D sprites moving through isometric landscapes.
- Roster: Features more than 10 playable characters, each equipped with their own unique skating stats and styles. It is also famously the only entry in the series that allows players to unlock and play as the game's narrator, DJ Professor K.
- Audio Sacrifices: Due to GBA cartridge memory limitations, the original game's acclaimed hip-hop and electronic soundtrack was condensed. Shin'en Multimedia compressed the audio down to about 8 tracks, looping them in short 30-to-45-second samples.
- Multiplayer: The game includes a head-to-head multiplayer mode utilizing the GBA Link Cable.
