Metroid II: Return of Samus (1991) is a 2D action-adventure game for the Game Boy, where Samus Aran is tasked with eradicating the Metroid species on their home planet, SR388. It features an atmospheric, linear, and explorative design focused on finding and destroying 47 Metroids, featuring new, permanent abilities like the Space Jump and Spider Ball.

Core Mission & Plot

• Objective: Bounty hunter Samus Aran is sent to the Metroid home planet, SR388, with a clear directive: exterminate all remaining Metroids to prevent them from falling into the hands of Space Pirates.
• Progression: The game features a unique "Metroid Counter." Players must hunt down a specific number of Metroids to trigger earthquakes that cause hazardous liquid to recede, allowing access to deeper cavern levels.
• Metroid Evolutions: Unlike the single form in the first game, Metroids here evolve through several increasingly dangerous stages: Alpha, Gamma, Zeta, and Omega. 

Key Features & Innovations

• Staple Upgrades: This entry introduced the Spider Ball (climbing walls), Space Jump (infinite jumping), Spring Ball, and Plasma Beam.
• Visual Identity: Because of the Game Boy's monochrome screen, developers added bulky, round shoulders to the Varia Suit so players could visually distinguish it from the standard Power Suit.
• Firsts: It was the first game in the series to feature Save Stations (replacing the password system) and a ship where Samus can replenish her health and missiles.
