Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen is a landmark real-time tactical role-playing game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in Japan in 1993 and North America in 1995. Developed by Quest Corporation and directed by Yasumi Matsuno, it is highly regarded for its unique blend of real-time strategy, automated combat, and deep moral alignment systems. Because Enix America only distributed roughly 25,000 physical cartridges in North America, it remains one of the rarest and most collectible critically acclaimed titles on the platform.

Core Narrative

The story centers on a rebel Liberation Army rising up against the corrupt Holy Zetegenian Empire. The continent has been brutally conquered by Empress Endora, who is secretly being manipulated by the dark mage Rashidi to resurrect a primordial demon named Diablo. You step into the role of the rebel commander, leading a massive revolution to restore peace and honor to the kingdom.

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Real-Time Strategy Maps: Battles take place across large, tactical overhead maps utilizing the SNES Mode 7 graphical engine. You deploy squads and direct their movement towards enemy targets in real-time.
  • Automated Squad Battles: When your squad collides with an enemy, a separate battle screen opens. Combat plays out automatically without direct button inputs. Characters attack a set number of times based on their class and whether they are positioned in the front or back row of their 5-unit grid.
  • Tactical Interventions: While combat is automated, you can set general behaviors (such as targeting the enemy leader) or turn the tide of battle by summoning magical Tarot cards collected from liberating towns.
  • Deep Unit Customization: Your army can hold dozens of characters. You can recruit and evolve traditional fantasy units—such as Knights, Wizards, Dragons, Griffons, and Vampires—into advanced character job classes as they level up.
  • Alignment, Reputation, and Multiple Endings

The defining aspect of Ogre Battle is its complex moral framework. Your choices directly impact your campaign:

  • Alignment (ALI) & Charisma (CHA): These individual unit stats dictate how pure or evil a character is. Killing weaker or lower-level enemies drops alignment, while fighting tougher foes raises it. Specific alignments are required to unlock certain powerful class promotions.
  • Reputation Meter: Liberating towns with high-alignment units raises your global reputation. Capturing or plundering towns with evil units lowers it.
  • 13 Distinct Endings: Your global reputation, alignment, hidden items discovered, and the specific heroes you recruit dictate which of the 13 different endings you receive at the culmination of the war.
