This ROM Hack uses Pokemon HeartGold as a base. I also have Pokemon True Soul available, which is many of the same quality of life upgrades, using Pokemon SoulSilver as a base.
Rather than aiming to incorporate all the quality-of-life features from newer games or allowing access to all 496 Pokémon before challenging the Pokémon League, Pokemon PureHeart incorporates a series of edits; ranging from minor tweaks to significant additions.
Updated Wild Encounters
Revamped the encounter tables to boost the variety of wild Pokémon you’ll come across. As you play, you’ll notice a mix of the original HeartGold and SoulSilver encounters with updated ones from Crystal. This tweak aims to give the game an official feel while offering a fresh experience in the wild!
For example, remember the early morning Phanpy and Teddiursa from Pokemon Crystal? They’ve made their way into Pure Heart and True Soul, along with other additions like Sneasel in Ice Path. Plus, on Route 36, you can now find Growlithe (or Vulpix in True Soul) thanks to a patch of grass inspired by Crystal, allowing you to catch them before facing Falkner!
New Evolution Methods
No need to hunt down trading partners or wait until the post-game for evolution items anymore! In Pure Heart and True Soul, we’ve introduced the Linking Cord item from Legends: Arceus. You can snag it as a prize in the Pokéathlon Dome, and it instantly evolves Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, and Haunter.
Plus, all evolution stones and items for Johto Pokémon with cross-gen evolutions are now available after beating Archer at the Radio Tower, before taking on the Pokémon League. No more sticking with Togetic all the way to Blue!
Fixed a long-standing problem in HeartGold and SoulSilver: now you can evolve Eevee into Leafeon and Glaceon, Magneton into Magnezone, and Nosepass into Probopass! We’ve added the mossy rock and icy rock from Platinum to Viridian Forest and Seafoam Islands, and Route 10 near the Kanto Power Plant is now a magnetic field zone.
The Johto Pokédex has been updated to include these new evolutions, so you can catch ’em all!
More Trainer Battles
Die-hard fans of Pokémon Crystal will be aware of the handful of new trainers
added throughout Johto that never made it into the remakes, but that’s not all…
Say goodbye to the empty Victory Road from the Johto days! In Pure Heart and True Soul, you’ll have one more challenge to overcome after Route 27/26 that you will not be familiar with! Twelve fresh trainers have been added, giving you some extra training before facing the Elite Four. These trainers, their teams, and their dialogue should feel right at home in the games.
As an added treat, trainers in Olivine Gym are ready to throw down on your first visit! Most important trainers have updated teams, nothing too crazy, just enough to keep things interesting and give the game a new feel.
Expanded Eusine’s Role in the Story
One gripe I had with HeartGold and SoulSilver was that they didn’t give Eusine the spotlight he deserves. But fear not! In Pure Heart and True Soul, you’ll square off against this mysterious rival twice more during the story. And if you’re up for a challenge, you can even rematch him every Sunday on Route 25.
But that’s not all! Alongside Eusine’s beefed-up role in the storyline, there’s a brand new battle theme just for him. I hope you’ll enjoy jamming out to it. Just a quick reminder: make sure to trigger the Suicune cutscene on Route 42 after your first showdown with Eusine in Cianwood City, or you’ll miss out on these bonus encounters!
Restored Game Corner
Brought back the original Game Corner layout from the original games, a feature included in the Japanese releases of HeartGold and SoulSilver but left out in the international versions. While the original slot machines didn’t make a return, we’ve made it easier for you to snag those rare Pokémon and TMs by allowing you to purchase coins directly from the reception. Enjoy the nostalgia (almost) as it used to be!
