Robopon 2: Ring Version is a monster-collecting role-playing video game developed by Red Company and published by Atlus for the Game Boy Advance in North America in 2002. Released simultaneously alongside Cross Version, it is a direct sequel to the original Game Boy Color title, blending standard creature-catching RPG mechanics with a distinctive robot and gadget aesthetic.

Story & Premise

The game continues the story of the protagonist, Cody, who previously became a legend on Porombo Island. On his way to a new tournament in Majico, Cody is shipwrecked and loses his original lineup of Robopon. To rescue the land of Majiko and recover mysterious X-Stones, he must travel through time using a machine built by his friend, Professor Don. Throughout his journey, Cody encounters returning characters like his rival Bisco and new allies who help him expand his mechanical party.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

While often compared to the Pokémon franchise, Robopon 2 replaces wild monster capturing with an innovative creation and customization infrastructure:

  • The "Sparking" System: Instead of capturing creatures in the wild, players create new Robopon by finding and combining different types of batteries. Each unique combination "sparks" a different robotic companion.
  • 4-on-4 Battles: The game steps up traditional turn-based combat by placing a full party of four Robopon into simultaneous battle against opposing squads, making tactical targeting highly critical.
  • Robot Customization: Players can heavily customize their party by altering their robots' paint colors, equipping them with upgradeable body parts, and installing new software to teach them combat skills.

Differences From Cross Version

Though both games share the same overarching plot, Ring Version features several unique structural and design distinctions:

  • Difficulty & Battles: Ring Version offers a more streamlined experience with fewer total random encounters and a lower overall difficulty curve compared to the battle-intensive Cross Version.
  • Exclusive Roster: Certain Robopon are exclusive to this version. Additionally, using the exact same battery combination in Ring vs. Cross results in entirely different "sparked" robots.
  • Starting Options: Players begin their journey with a different pool of starting Robopon and face altered enemy trainer lineups.
