Secret of Mana (originally released in Japan as Seiken Densetsu 2) is a landmark 1993 action role-playing game developed and published by SquareSoft for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The Story & Setting

The plot centers around a young village boy named Randi, who accidentally draws the legendary Mana Sword from a stone. This act inadvertently breaks an ancient seal, unleashing a tide of monsters upon the world and leading to his banishment from home. To restore the balance of the universe, Randi must travel the world to find the eight Mana Seeds and recharge the blade.

Along the way, he is joined by two companions:

• Primm: A fierce noblewoman searching for her lost lover.
• Popoi: A mischievous, amnesiac sprite child from a dwarf village.
• Together, they must prevent a corrupt empire and a sinister sorcerer named Thanatos from unsealing the ancient, weaponized Mana Fortress.

• Real-Time Combat & Stamina: Battles happen directly on the overworld screen. Instead of button mashing, players must manage a Power Meter that charges up to 100% after every strike to maximize damage.
• The "Ring Menu" System: Players can pause the action instantly to pull up a revolving ring of icons around their character, letting them swap equipment, cast spells, or check stats seamlessly without jumping to a separate menu screen.
• 3-Player Co-Op Multiplayer: By utilizing the SNES Multitap accessory, up to three players can play simultaneously, control the main trio, and work together to conquer dungeons and defeat massive bosses.
• Weapon & Spell Progression: The party uses eight distinct types of weapons. Collecting hidden "Mana Orbs" lets a blacksmith forge stronger versions of these weapons, while casting magic frequently levels up elements like fire, water, and earth.

Lasting Legacy

Secret of Mana is universally praised for its vibrantly colorful pixel graphics, quirky cast of characters (like Neko, the overpriced merchant cat), and its legendary soundtrack composed by Hiroki Kikuta, which pushed the SNES sound chip to its absolute limits.
