Sonic Rush Adventure is a critically acclaimed 2007 high-speed 2D platformer co-developed by Dimps and Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Nintendo DS. As the direct sequel to the 2005 hit Sonic Rush, the game blends classic momentum-based side-scrolling with an expansive, nautical exploration theme.

Core Gameplay & Mechanics

  • Playable Roster: Players can control both Sonic the Hedgehog and Blaze the Cat. Each character features distinct storylines and individual attributes, utilizing a "Tension Gauge" to trigger blazing speed boosts.
  • Dual-Screen Action: The game features 14 traditional action stages that seamlessly span across both the top and bottom screens of the Nintendo DS, allowing for massive loops and vertical drops.
  • Nautical Exploration: Moving away from traditional world maps, players use the DS touch screen to chart paths and navigate the ocean. You pilot up to five different watercraft built by Tails—including a water bike, submarine, hovercraft, and pirate ship—via specialized stylus-controlled minigames.
  • 3D Boss Battles: Each major zone culminates in an epic 3D boss confrontation that takes full advantage of both DS displays simultaneously.

Plot & New Characters

While flying over the ocean in the Tornado, Sonic and Tails are caught in a storm and teleported to the Sol Dimension (Blaze’s home world). Stranded on a remote island, they meet Marine the Raccoon, an energetic and aspiring explorer who serves as the group's guide. Together with Blaze, they must embark on a high-seas journey across seven main islands to stop Captain Whisker and his band of robotic pirates from stealing the mystical Jeweled Scepter.

Emerald Collection & True Ending

  • Chaos Emeralds: Earned by encountering and defeating a rival robot named Johnny in high-stakes water bike races across the open sea.
  • Sol Emeralds: Obtained by completing specific, challenging boss rematch missions scattered throughout the map.
  • Secret Boss: Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds and all seven Sol Emeralds unlocks the true final boss battle against a joint threat, played from a unique top-down perspective.

Connectivity & Features

  • Multiplayer Modes: Supports local wireless play and DS Download Play, allowing two players to face off in head-to-head ring-collecting battles and races. It was also notable as the first game in the Sonic franchise to support worldwide online competitive match-making.
  • Mission System: Features 100 optional side missions given by various NPCs that unlock collectibles, such as island decorations and hidden statues.
