Super Mario Bros. 3Mix is a massive, highly acclaimed 2014 ROM hack of the original NES version of Super Mario Bros. 3, developed by prominent community creator Southbird. Rather than being a simple level edit, Southbird completely disassembled the game's core assembly code to redesign mechanics, features, and level layouts from scratch. The game serves as a expansive, playable love letter to the entire Mario franchise. It weaves iconic elements from past and future releases (like Super Mario World, Super Mario Land, and even 3D titles like Super Mario Galaxy) straight into a 2D NES platforming experience.
Core Gameplay Changes & Features
- Three Playable Characters: Players can select Mario, Luigi, or Toad at any point from the map, allowing complete configuration versatility.
- Expanded Power-Up Arsenal: The game brings in specialized abilities from other titles. The Penguin Suit replaces the Frog Suit, and the Super Carrot from Super Mario Land 2 replaces the Tanooki Suit.
- Rideable Yoshi: In an incredible technical feat for the hardware, a fully operational, rideable Yoshi is coded directly into the 8-bit engine.
- Modern Save System: Battery backup save capabilities are integrated natively into the software, ensuring level progression is permanently recorded.
World Design & Progression
- Non-Linear Level Re-Entry: Unlike the classic NES layout, players can freely backtrack and re-enter previously completed worlds and individual stages.
- Star Coin Completion System: Every level hides three hidden Star Coins, functioning exactly like modern entries. Collecting these coins unlocks hidden paths and secret portions of the overworld map.
- Branching Exits: Multi-tiered level progression is achieved through alternate hidden exits scattered across specific zones.
Custom Assets & Presentation
- Custom Dynamic Audio: The soundtrack features demade 8-bit renditions of musical tracks pulling from different eras of Mario history.
- Entirely New Boss Fights: The standard Koopalings are replaced by uniquely programmed boss encounters that pay tribute to classic enemies across the series.
- Hybrid World Themes: Level archetypes frequently cross over. For example, certain zones combine the digging mechanics of Super Mario Bros. 2 with the distinct layouts found in different franchise titles.
