Super Mario 64 DS is an enhanced Nintendo DS remake of the classic 3D platformer Super Mario 64. Released as a launch title for the handheld system in 2004, it reimagines the original adventure with updated graphics, new gameplay modes, and expanded content. 

Core Gameplay & Story

As in the original, the plot centers on rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser, who has stolen the castle's Power Stars and imprisoned its inhabitants within magical paintings. However, this version begins with Yoshi as the primary protagonist after Mario, Luigi, and Wario disappear upon entering the castle. 

• Expanded Star Count: Players must now collect a total of 150 Power Stars (30 more than the original).
• Playable Characters: You can unlock and switch between four characters, each with unique abilities:
• Yoshi: Can eat enemies to make eggs and hover mid-air with a flutter kick.
• Mario: An all-rounder who can wall-jump and use the Wing Cap or the new Balloon Power.
• Luigi: Boasts the highest jump, can run on water for a short time, and becomes invisible using the Power Flower.
• Wario: The strongest character, capable of breaking heavy black blocks and turning into Metal Wario. 

New DS-Specific Features

The remake utilizes the Nintendo DS hardware to introduce several new elements: 

• Dual Screen Support: The top screen shows the main action, while the bottom touch screen displays a map, radar, or controls.
• Touch-Screen Minigames: Over 30 touch-sensitive minigames (such as card games and puzzles) can be unlocked by catching rabbits scattered throughout the castle.
• Wireless Multiplayer: A Wireless Versus mode allows up to four players to compete in star-collecting battles using a single game card via Download Play.
• Control Options: Includes a "Touch Mode" that uses the stylus or a thumb strap to emulate an analog stick for 360-degree movement.
