Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel is a 1994 action-platformer developed by Iguana Entertainment and published by Sunsoft for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It is a spin-off of the Aero the Acro-Bat series, elevating Aero’s rival, a heroic flying squirrel ninja, into the starring role.

Story & Premise

The plot kicks off when Zero receives a distressed telegram from his girlfriend, Amy, informing him that an evil lumberjack named Jacques Le Lean is destroying their homeland, the Stony Forest, to manufacture counterfeit money. Defying his boss, Edgar Ektor, Zero hijacks a plane, crashes into an island beachhead, and fights his way back home to rescue Amy and save the forest.

Gameplay & Mechanics

While it shares the 16-bit mascot-platformer DNA of Aero the Acro-Bat, Zero trades circus stunts for aggressive, high-speed ninja combat:

  • Weapon Arsenal: Zero attacks enemies directly using collectible shurikens (ninja stars) and close-range nunchucks.
  • Aviation Actions: As a flying squirrel, Zero can jump into the air and perform a swoop or glide to cross massive vertical gaps.
  • Dive-Bomb Attack: Zero can execute a high-velocity, diagonal dive-bomb to smash through breakable walls, uncover hidden paths, and crush enemies.
  • Level Flow: The game consists of 15 distinct stages spread across beach, cliff side, factory, and forest environments. Rather than searching for stars or hoops like Aero, Zero's objective is pure, linear progression to the exit.

Visual & Audio Style

The game is heavily defined by its edgy, mid-90s "attitude" aesthetic, featuring a dark but vibrant color palette:

  • SNES Architecture: The SNES version is praised for utilizing the console's advanced color capabilities and transparency layers to create lush background gradients and atmospheric fog effects.
  • Soundtrack: The audio features a high-energy, rock-infused 16-bit soundtrack composed by Rick Fox, matching the frantic pace of the gameplay.
